Singer Forgets Anthem Words Before Memorial Cup [VIDEO]
To most of us, singing in front of a crowd is a nerve-racking experience.
Imagine singing the national anthem before a sporting event in front of an full of people. If the anxiety isn’t managed, it’s not going to end well. That’s exactly what happened before the Memorial Cup game between the Portland Winterhawks and Halifax Mooseheads in Saskatoon last Saturday night.
The local singer, Alexis Normand, forgot the words of the Star Spangled Banner three lines after starting it. In the video (above) the crowd at Saskatoon’s Credit Union Centre were initially entertained, with some fans smiling and giggling — even the players seemed amused. But then sympathy kicked in and many of the 8,000 in attendance began to sing along with her.
It’s not the first singer who forgot the words to an anthem – it certainly won’t be the last – and with the easy access to cameras and social media, the videos of the mistakes spread very quickly.
You may remember Caroline Marcil who in Québec City a few years ago forgot the anthem before a Canada vs USA hockey game. Marcil fled the ice when the words escaped her returning a short time later with a lyrics sheet. This wasn’t Caroline’s day as she lost her footing and fell to the ice.
Something very similar happened with our Brazilian friends in 2009, during a political event in São Paulo. One of the most famous singers in the country, Vanusa, couldn’t sing the second part of the Brazilian National Anthem even with the lyrics in front of her. The media and population mocked her about this episode for months, what caused her to stop singing for one whole year.
